Onsite field trip or bus field trip: which fits your school?
Last reviewed: October 2026
The short answer. An onsite field trip brings the experience to your school, so you can reach a full grade in a few days with no buses, no travel time, and no permission slips for an off-campus trip. A bus field trip is the better choice when the place itself is the lesson, such as a factory floor, a museum collection, or a college campus.

When an Onsite Field Trip makes sense
- You want every student in a grade to have the same experience.
- Buses, drivers, or travel time are hard to find.
- You want the day tied to curriculum standards and to career follow-up.
When a bus field trip makes sense
- Students need to see a real workplace, campus, or collection in person.
- You are reaching one class, not a whole grade.
You can do both
Some schools use an Onsite Field Trip to reach every student, then send interested students to a local employer through Career Opportunities in CareerStack™, such as job shadows, internships, and apprenticeships. CareerStack™ is included with district-funded Onsite Field Trips. Read how to choose a mobile STEM lab, how schools pay, or check availability.

Onsite Field Trips are the best fit
- For Southeast schools that want to reach a full grade with hands-on STEM career experiences and no travel.
A bus field trip may fit better
- When the place is the point of the trip, or when you only need to take one class.
Questions about onsite and bus field trips

- No. The lab comes to your school and parks in your lot. There are no buses to book and no permission slips for an off-campus trip.
- How many students can take part in one day?
- Up to 125 students a day, in class-sized sessions. To reach a full grade, most schools book 2 to 3 days.

- What do teachers need to prepare?
- Nothing for the day itself. Betabox Guides run every session and bring all equipment and materials.

- Yes. Every experience connects to curriculum standards.
